Appearance

  • Adult Aedes aegypti have dark brown to black and white markings on the body
  • Egg is shaped like a rugby ball and is black in colour
  • Larvae rest 45 degrees from the surface of the water

Lifecycle

  • Transition from egg to adult stage takes 6 – 8 days
  • Aedes mosquitoes undergo complete metamorphosis – egg, larval, pupa and adult

Habits

  • Aedes aegypti can fly short distances (50 – 100m)
  • Biting times – biting peaks at change of light intensity (after sunrise and before sunset)
  • Prefer darker colours like red and black 
  • Habitat – Aedes will breed in containers, especially man-made containers with clean water
